A Gist about how Mother’s day was celebrated in the Ancient Times

Every special celebration or festival always holds some back history. Although people celebrate the festival with a lot of fervor and enthusiasm, they hardly know the reason for the celebrations. So, just like all other special days, even Mother’s day is one special day that is celebrated by one and all without really know how it originated.

Read below to know how even in the ancient times, special festival days were dedicated to thank the Mothers, as these eventually led to the modern day celebrations of Mother’s day:

  • In ancient Greece there were spring festivals which were held, in honor of the Greek Goddess, Rhea. This Greek Goddess was the wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities. So, this festival was basically celebrated to thank all the mothers.

  • The ancient Romans celebrated a spring festival called the Hilara and the mother Goddess Cybele was worshipped during this time. During this festival, the followers of this Mother Goddess used to play games, hold parades and have masquerades in the temple and this festival lasted for a period of three days. So, here too by worshipping the Mother Goddess, the Romans did their bit to thank the mothers.

  • In the year 1600, there was a special occasion called Mothering Sunday which took place on the 4th Sunday of every month. This special Sunday would start with a prayer service to honor Virgin Mary and then the children would gift flowers to their mothers. So, this day too was especially dedicated to the mothers.

Mother’s day has always been celebrated by people of all cultures and civilizations but in different forms and ways.
